This course exposes students to major trends in religion and contemporary international politics. The past quarter century has seen religion burst onto the political scene, in both violent and peaceful ways. Students will analyze various ways in which religion shapes international politics, and assess theoretical explanations of religion's political importance. As a survey of religion and global politics, the course draws on readings touching on a variety of regions and religions, arranged around five themes: religion and democracy, dictatorship, political violence, sustainable development, and US foreign policy. |
